Maureen Neckelmann

Professor of the Interdisciplinary Program of Studies of Religion, in a shared appointment of the Faculty of Theology and the Institute of Sociology. Her research interests are related to the sociology of religion and the understanding of the religious phenomenon in a context of social and cultural transformation, with a special focus on Chile. She trained as a sociologist and master’s degree in sociology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and then completed a master’s degree in sociocultural studies and obtained a PhD degree in Sociology at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Between 2018 and 2024 she was a professor at the Institute of Sociology UC, where she developed especially undergraduate and graduate teaching in the lines of historical processes of formation of Latin American society and sociology of religion.
Her research work has focused on religious practice in contemporary Chile, including dimensions such as popular religion, youth religiosity and the effect of religion on family relationships. Her most recent interest is linked to the phenomenon of intergenerational transmission of religion from a comparative perspective, a topic that she will deepen in the framework of an initiation Fondecyt project (2025-2028).
